LAX runway close call: FAA investigates near-collision incident amid rising safety concerns

Tuesday, December 31, 2024

On December 29, 2024, a significant runway incursion at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) was narrowly averted, highlighting ongoing concerns about airfield safety.

The incident involved Key Lime Air Flight 563, a chartered jet transporting a college basketball team, and a departing aircraft.

Incident Details

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Key Lime Air Flight 563 was instructed to “hold short” of the active runway due to an aircraft in the process of takeoff.

Despite this directive, the chartered jet proceeded onto the runway.

Air traffic controllers promptly intervened, issuing urgent commands to prevent a potential collision.

The departing aircraft successfully lifted off without incident, and the Key Lime Air flight remained on the ground. No injuries or damages were reported.

The FAA has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident to determine the factors that led to the runway incursion. Preliminary findings suggest a possible miscommunication or misunderstanding of air traffic control instructions. The agency emphasizes that runway incursions are serious safety concerns and is committed to implementing measures to prevent such occurrences.

Runway Incursion Statistics

Runway incursions, defined as any unauthorized presence on a runway, pose significant risks to aviation safety.

The FAA’s Runway Safety Statistics indicate that, as of September 2024, there have been 1,496 runway incursions nationwide, with 15 categorized as the most severe (Category A), where a collision was narrowly avoided.

Recent Similar Incidents

This event at LAX is reminiscent of a previous incident on January 13, 2023, at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York.

In that case, an American Airlines Boeing 777 crossed an active runway without clearance, causing a Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 to abort its takeoff.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) attributed the JFK incident to the American Airlines crew’s loss of situational awareness due to distractions during taxiing.

FAA Safety Initiatives

In response to such incidents, the FAA has been proactive in enhancing runway safety. The agency’s Runway Incursion Mitigation (RIM) program focuses on identifying and addressing airport areas with a history of runway incursions.

Additionally, the FAA has issued Safety Alerts for Operators (SAFOs) to provide guidance on mitigating collision risks during runway crossings.

Conclusion

The recent close call at LAX underscores the critical importance of strict adherence to air traffic control instructions and the need for continuous vigilance in runway operations.

Both the FAA and NTSB continue to investigate and implement strategies to enhance runway safety, aiming to prevent future incidents and ensure the well-being of all air travelers.
